Town of Hempstead

The Town of Hempstead is the lead partner on the Hydrogen Refueling Station as well as the Clean Energy Project. The town’s Department of Conservation and Waterways is the Project Manager, responsible for overall project management and coordination of the project partners and contractors. The town also serves as the host site by providing the property for the station at its Point Lookout office. The town is responsible for site preparation that includes all labor and equipment necessary for debris removal, building a concrete foundation, perimeter fencing and utility (electric, gas sanitary sewer and water) connections to the site.

Hempstead Town is the most populous township in America, with nearly 800,000 residents. Under the leadership of Town Supervisor Kate Murray and the Department of Conservation and Waterways, the town has completed a number of progressive renewable energy projects, including a 40 kw DC coupled solar power system installed at its Town Hall.

National Grid

National Grid is an international energy delivery company. In the U.S., National Grid delivers electricity to approximately 3.3 million customers in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York and Rhode Island, and manages the electricity network on Long Island under an agreement with the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA). It is the largest distributor of natural gas in the northeastern U.S., serving approximately 3.4 million customers in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York and Rhode Island. National Grid also owns over 4,000 megawatts of contracted electricity generation that provides power to over one million LIPA customers.

National Grid is a strategic funding partner on the Hydrogen Fueling Station. It will own the entire refueling station for the first three years of station operation. At the completion of these first three years, ownership of the station will be transferred to the Town.

The New York State alternative fuel vehicle fueling infrastructure tax credit will contribute 50% of the total cost of the refueling station. The station will also be eligible for funds through the federal Alternative Fuel Infrastructure Tax Credit. In addition, National Grid is contributing $55,000 to the project.
